Preview: Friday 6 May, 7 – 9 pm Shifting Boundaries addresses the themes of art and domestic space, and the relationships between the public and private spheres. Curated by Clare Sheppeard, the exhibition explores the ambiguities and contradictions inherent in our understanding of domestic space: while conveying a sense of security, intimacy and comfort, it also entails tension, confinement and alienation. Examples of what you might encounter include: Living and working in his studio, Ben Ashton paints sensitive and intimate portraits of life with his wife Fiona. Annabelle Dalby reveals fleeting moments of human contact and the power of memory to reconstruct the past in the details of family archives. Anne Eggebert and Julian Walker moved with their son into Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge, a domestic home which doubled as an art museum. Recalling childhood memories of her grandparents’ caravan in Cornwall, Caitlin Heffernan creates objects and installations using embroidery, drawing and photographs to recreate and capture the essence of this time. Through installation and performance, Ingrid Plum focuses on objects which have strong sentimental value, but which have outstayed their purpose. Incorporating personal objects, images and artifacts, Dave Stephens addresses concepts of inside, outside and the movement between the two. Photographer Julia Waugh enters the privacy of men’s bedrooms to produce a series of portraits. ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS Living Room: Visitors are invited to bring along an object which will take on a new life within the space. Objects will be photographed and filmed as part of the exhibition.
